Ep. 9: Definitely Not Derby Pie

Well, hey there, kiddos. Back again so soon. This past weekend was the Kentucky Derby, which means absolutely nothing to either one of us. but we used it as an excuse to delve into one of America’s lesser-known culinary classics: definitely not derby pie. You’ll have to tune in to find out why we definitely didn’t make derby pie for this episode, and instead stuck to the much more hilariously named Fannie Lou’s thoroughbred pie instead.

Before we got into the pie chat, we had a weird side quest about sitting up straight and exes, as well as a debate about whether or not it’s acceptable to eat Taco Bell a. in your car, b. on Texas soil, c. at room temperature or d. at all. Liz brought up two recipes she’s been thinking about lately, one that she has made before (NYT Cooking’s lemony orzo with asparagus — a fantastic late spring/early summer make), and one that she hasn’t, but wants to (Justine Doiron’s country fried cinnamon rolls, which Liz erroneously refers to as “chicken fried” throughout, because she’s a Texan, so please forgive her).

Steph talks a bit about rhubarb season and rhubarb bakes, including the rhubarb jam she’s been making lately, with a shoutout to Jam Bake for being an excellent go-to for making preserves for baking.

After that. we finally got to the pie. A little background. A little history. Another little side quest about, of all things, the Dallas Cowboys during the ‘90s. This pie was a journey, and we had mixed feelings about it, but did manage to commit ourselves on one point, which is that it is not a very pretty pie. We will get to the photos here in a minute, but first, here is Steph’s go-to pie crust recipe, as well as the book she considers her pie bible, in case anyone wants to check it out.

Okay. Now for the bakes.

Liz’s Fannie Lou thoroughbred pie:

And Steph’s pie:

And there you have it. An American classic? Haha. You decide. Thanks for joining us, as always, and we will see you next time for miso pecan banana bread. Let us know if you are baking along! And also, there is currently a poll going on over on our Instagram stories about whether or not Liz, as the podcast’s sole sad American on American soil, will have to take one for the team and go try Taco Bell’s new collab with Cheez-It, so go vote for that if you are so inclined (editor’s note: I know you are all going to vote yes, so I will forgive you preemptively).

Take care, y’all. May all your bakes be delicious, if not pretty, and may all your Fannie be thoroughbred!
